Purposeful Reality

How consciously do you try to shape your ideas about the world you live in and, consequently, the direct circumstances to maximally support you in achieving the life that you want to live.

Sometimes, people ask me: “What exactly do you mean with ‘how purposefully do you create your daily reality?‘”

So, let me explain.

We all have ideas about our life, what it is now, what it could be, what it should be. You too. But:

How purposefully do you create your daily reality?

In other words, how consciously do you try to shape your ideas about the world you live in and, consequently, the direct circumstances to maximally support you in achieving the life that you want to live.

So, what are these ‘direct circumstances’?

Well, first, limit these to the things you can influence. Global warming, global politics? Yes, you can do your little bit, and you should, but you cannot stop it on your own. So, largely take it as a given.

So, what can you influence? Well. A lot. In many cases enough to live the life that you want to live. I usually work with the following categories:

  • Your personal reality – These are mainly the ideas in your head about your world. What are your implicit assumptions? Are they right? These are what I call our ‘personal mind models’. Interestingly, in many cases we tend to prefer not to test our personal mind models. Often, we rather live in a pleasant illusion than to face the brutal facts of life. Why?
    • We may feel incompetent to solve the underlying issue.
    • We may be afraid that solving the issue will cause uncontrollable damage.
    • We may be lazy, and do not want to put the effort in solving the issue.
    • It may feel better for some to complain and be pathetic, than to be strong and take the bull by the horns.
    • Etcetera. There are many reasons.
  • Your group reality – Similarly, there are lots of ideas in your head about your world, that were formed by the group or groups that you are part of. This may be your spouse, your group of friends, political party you vote for, cultural group you are part of, country nationality, etc. The same as above considerations apply here.
  • Your physical reality – These are the ideas in your head about the tangible world around you. Where and how do you live, work or disport yourself? What behavioral habits are caused or enforced by your physical environment? Here too, the same considerations apply.

Now, let’s talk about purposeful.

With what purpose do you fill your days? Are you conscious? Do you think about it, at all? That is where it all starts. Once you know what you want with your life, today and in the long run, you can start shaping your personal, group and physical realities to support living towards your purpose.

That brings me to one last bit of reality: do you have the skills and tools to realize your purpose?

  • Your skills reality – Are you able to realize your dream, the life that you want to live? Do you have the mental and physical skills, if needed? But also, do you have the required finances, and other means that you may need? Don’t be a daydreamer or bench sitter! Take action.

That’s it. That’s all.

And my art?

So, how does it relate to my art, when I say that “with my art, I aim to bring affirmation of who you are – your identity and meaning through narratives, both individually and as a human being. Attempting to reduce your existential loneliness, my art aims to help you feel that you belong in the life that you want to live”.

Well, it’s simple.

I hope that in my artworks you recognize something of yourself. And hopefully it gives you a confirmation of ideas that you have or once had. And hopefully this confirmation gives you a little nudge to move towards living the life you want to live.
