Pink Glasses

Focus on the positive and the pleasant makes us overly optimistic and overly positive about ourselves and our life. And that gives us the strength to carry on, to do crazy things, and sometimes even succeed with those crazy things. That is a beautiful evolutionary survival mechanism.

I was reading this article in a Dutch newspaper about “why we see what we want to see”. In summary, it says the following. Our brain filters our observation and thinking into a pleasant life and clean conscious, like a spindoctor in our head. Sometimes we act cowardly, but we don’t see it that way. Sometimes we see terrible things in the news, but we simply ignore it. It is called “strategic ignorance”. We see the world through pink glasses, proverbially. Our ‘smart unconsciousness’ protects us from too much misery.

Clearly, this has everything to do with mind models. We create our own reality. So you may wonder, why do we do this? And, do animals do the same? Is it a unique trait of the human brain?

Difficult to say, of course, but I think ultimately it is a survival mechanism. It gives us the strength to keep going on in life. Imagine that we would genuinely care about all the misery and injustice in the world. I think most of us would fall into depression and some might even commit suicide. We are simply not strong enough to deal with all the negative things in the world.

So, we ignore. We ignore the negative. And, often, we emphasize and enlarge the positive. That is exactly what we do in social media, isn’t it? Our memory works the same. We tend to forget negative occurences and we tend to remember and celebrate positive events. We cherish our holiday pictures.

Focus on the positive and the pleasant makes us overly optimistic and overly positive about ourselves and our life. And that gives us the strength to carry on, to do crazy things, and sometimes even succeed with those crazy things. That is how we progress as a person. That is how we progress as a species. That is a beautiful evolutionary survival mechanism.

But above all, it gives us a pleasant and carefree life.
